A summertime classic, and a staple of many a British flower bed. The rose encompasses grace and elegance, and with so many to choose you'd be hard pressed not to get carried away. Many of the gardens that open with Scotland's Gardens Scheme have lovely roses. Here's but just a few:

Woodfall Gardens

This lovely three acre 18th century triple walled garden has been thoughtfully restored to provide year round interest. Many mature trees and shrubs including some less common species; herbaceous borders and shrub roses surround the foundations of original greenhouses; grass borders; a parterre; extensive beds of fruit and vegetables; a herb garden and a small woodland walk. This unusual garden is well worth a visit.

Drumstinchall House

An extensive and established garden, surrounded by mature trees, with fine views to the sea two miles away. There are colourful herbaceous and mixed borders, and a rose garden in front of the house. A variety of paths wind their way through more borders, a rock garden, rhododendrons and azaleas, and past the ruin of the original house to a woodland walk around the edge of the garden. There is a vegetable garden, including a polytunnel, on your way to Drumstinchall Cottage.

House of Aigas

The House of Aigas

The House of Aigas has a small arboretum of named
Victorian specimen trees and modern additions.The garden
consists of extensive rockeries, herbaceous borders, ponds
and shrubs. Aigas Field Centre rangers lead regular guided
walks on nature trails through woodland, moorland and
around a loch.
