Spring equinox 2018

The spring, or vernal, equinox happens roughly the same time each year.

It occurs as the sun crosses the celestial equator. The celestrial equator is the imaginary line in the sky that line's up with earth's equator. The spring equinox in the northern Hemisphere is the autumnal equinox in the southern hemisphere.

So whilst the spring equinox means an earlier sunrise and later sunset in the North the opposite it occuring in the southern hemisphere.

The spring equinox is good signal of warmer temperatures and mellower weather for us in Scotland.

The equinox was important in pagan ritual and continues to be celebratory occasion in neo-paganism. For gardeners it's a happy reminder that plants are beginning to do their thing!
